The Caucasian Chalk Circle 23.01.18
LIVE WORKSHOP: | Costume design |
Written by: Bertolt Brecht Directed by: Peta Lily Performed: Lime Grove, London College of Fashion, UAL Photo credits: Michelle Marshall
Additional thanks to Donnatella Barbieri and Claire Christie for costume guidence and feedback.
'The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht is about war and its aftermath, as well as love and motherly love. I would also say it’s about ownership, such as who has the right over the land we step on, borders, who is the rightful mother of a child and the differences between the rich and the poor. Therefore, I would say that the play is still very current today. After my initial research-process for this performance of The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, I knew that I wanted to show transformation, such as time, character transformation and space. While looking at Uvildy Ice by Ilya Birman, and general ice cracking and breaking, I discovered that I wanted to create a costume for the character The Governor’s Wife. The character is beautiful, horrible and gruesome. However, she is also fragile and easy to break, which is why I wanted to capture the illution of ice breaking throughout the piece.'
